Tibits Bankside – Vegetarian Dining Buffet Style at Tibits Bankside

Tibits Vegetarian Dining in Style:

Guest post by Peter Edwards (AKA The Veggie Man)

As a long-standing vegetarian, I was excited by the prospect of choosing from over 40 dishes at the Tibits Bankside vegetarian buffet. Located on lively Southwark Street, this is the second London outpost for this Swiss culinary concept.

Tibits was founded by Swiss brothers Christian, Daniel and Reto Frei in response to the lack of vegetarian choices on most restaurant menus. Their aim was to offer a delicious and fresh vegetarian buffet, as speedy as a fast food joint and as cosy as corner café. At Tibits Bankside they have succeeded in achieving this aim.

On arrival, we were shown to a table in the comfortable dining area to the rear of the restaurant and then made our way to the heart of the Tibits buffet – the Food Boat.

For someone used to the single vegetarian option on most menus, the choice of dishes at Tibits was almost overwhelming. Fortunately, there is ample opportunity to sample a range of dishes, because at Tibits you load up your own plate and then take it to the counter to be weighed. Dinner plates are charged at £2.80 per 100 grams, and this allows you to fill your plate for well under £10 a head.

Tibits Menu How it works

Tibits Food selection

The dishes on offer included fresh soup, a selection of cold salads and dips, and several hot main courses. The food is international, but with an emphasis on Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine including  Baba Ganoush, Curried Quinoa and Nasu Dengaku, whose warming flavours were perfect for a cold January evening. We particularly appreciated the clear allergen labelling on all dishes which means that even those suffering from allergies or food intolerances can enjoy many of the dishes on offer.

Tibits also offers a well-stocked bar including a good selection of craft beers and ciders; cocktails and wine. We opted for a bottle of Chilean Malbec which boasted berry and plum flavours and was the perfect accompaniment to our laden plates of food.

Desserts follow the same formula, with a selection of delicious dishes including sticky toffee pudding, molten chocolate pudding and a cinnamon & mandarin pannacotta. Having finished our meals there was no pressure to vacate our table, and we were able to enjoy the last of our wine and indulge in some people watching as other diners came and went.

Overall, Tibits is a great choice for vegetarians and those will allergies and intolerances who are looking for a hearty meal or a quick snack in the heart of Bankside, and who will revel in the number of choices available to them. Whilst the buffet set-up means this isn’t a waiter-service fine dining experience, it would be the perfect early evening pit stop before heading to one of the South Bank’s theatres or music venues.
